Event Summary | This online course will support subject leaders in understanding the importance of developing arithmetical fluency across the primary phase. | ||||||
Event description | 'To the person without number sense, arithmetic is a bewildering territory in which any deviation from the known path may rapidly lead to being totally lost.' Dowker, A. (1992). Computational strategies of professional mathematicians. Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 23 (1), 45-55. The aims of the primary mathematics curriculum highlight the importance of developing arithmetic fluency. It states that we should ensure that pupils 'become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics' and that they develop the 'ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.' Progress in mathematics is so much easier for pupils if they develop fluency with certain key concepts that underpin mathematics - concepts such as place value, number bonds, multiplication and division facts and so on. Many of these concepts are encountered very early on in a child's mathematical journey. Yet, for many of our children still struggle with the recall and application of these ideas when they start in secondary school. This course aims to highlight these key areas of the curriculum and explore the models, representations and experiences that are needed to support learners to securely understand these key ideas. It is ideal for subject leaders wishing to lead developments in this area across the primary phase. |
